Queen Elizabeth visits Gurudwara in West London Saturday, October 16 2004 18:28 Hrs (IST)
London:
Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip visited a famous Gurudwara in West London on the occasion of the 2.5 million pounds extension plan of the shrine.
The two were given a warm welcome by several hundred people when they arrived at the Gurudwara in Hounslow yesterday (Oct 15, 2004). Both were garlanded as the crowd cheered their arrival.
The Queen and Prince Philip removed their shoes and wore headscarves to acknowledge the customs of the Gurudwara.
The Queen, wearing white ankle socks with a golden shawl covering her head, stood respectfully and bowed as she entered the Gurudwara.
The Prince wore a blue headscarf and clasped his hands in a sign of greeting.
Inside the shrine, the Queen viewed an exhibition to mark the 400th anniversary of the Guru Granth Sahib. She was also introduced to representatives of Asian groups.
