Pawar meets Sonia to discuss Chief Minister issue Sunday, October 17 2004 10:43 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
NCP (Nationalist Congress Party) chief Sharad Pawar is meeting Congress president Sonia Gandhi today (Oct 17, 2004) to sort out the issue of Chief Ministership of Maharashtra where the Maratha strong man-led party emerged as the single largest party in the Assembly polls.
The meeting takes place a day after Gandhi remained non-committal on the issue and expressed the hope it would be resolved through discussion.
Pawar, who held discussions with his party colleagues and Union Minister Praful Patel earlier in the day, has maintained that the principle of the largest party getting the top post should stand as his party has emerged the largest party in the Assembly polls.
"The argument given to us by Congress five years back was that the single largest party should get the Chief Ministership. The principle was also applied recently in Karnataka," Pawar said yesterday.
