Govt to frame law to check import of waste material Monday, October 18 2004 14:42 Hrs (IST)
Indore:
The Centre is considering framing a law to check the menace of waste material imported into the country through sea-routes in which large number of explosive are being found, Union Minister of State for Home Shriprakash Jaiswal said in Indore today (Oct 18, 2004).
"The Government would frame a new law to check the menace of waste material being imported in the country especially after the recovery of large number of explosive," he told reporters in Indore.
The Government will also install large scanning machines at the ports to screen the waste material at the ports, he said.
The waste material will be given entry into the country only after a certificate from a competent authority that will certify that it does not have any objectionable material, Jaiswal said.
Under the new law provisions will be made to ensure that large amount of waste material should be unloaded at the big ports of the country only and not anywhere else, while smaller quantity should be unloaded at smaller ports, he said.
On the issue of recovery of large quantity of explosive in the waste material from Ghaziabad, the minister said a probe so far in the matter has ruled out any conspiracy.
He said it was difficult to figure out in the waste the presence of live and spent ammunition.
