PVR Pictures to distribute New Age comedy Flavours
Monday, October 18 2004 20:24 Hrs (IST)

Mumbai: After a successful run in North America, and wide acclaim from the audience and mainstream North American critics, Flavours, the acclaimed comedy, is now set to release in India on October 22.

PVR Pictures Limited, the fully owned subsidiary of PVR Limited, will distribute the film in India. Announcing this, Kamal Gianchandani, Vice President of PVR Pictures said, "It's a genuinely a good film and we are sure that it will be received well, when it releases this October. The film is shot 100% in USA; the 'story telling' is slick and contemporary. We are confident that it will connect with the Indian audience, especially in major cities."

Producer Anupam Mittal and CEO of People Group that also owns the popular portal, Shaadi.com, said, "Flavours has been made for the New Age Indian (NAI). It is for the discerning theatre-going audience, which we estimate, is approximately 50-75 million people in India. These individuals are tired of the same old formula movies that are being dished out and are looking for something that is different yet thoroughly entertaining. Flavours is an attempt to offer this market world-class, sophisticated and enjoyable movies. Hopefully, we will achieve our goal!"

Flavours, the new age comedy, opened to rave reviews in North America in July this year. While Hollywood Reporter calls it "Slick, up tempo and lively", The New York Times called it "Bright, good-spirited". Influential trade magazine Variety remarked that the movie was "Snappy. Upbeat." Rediff.com, one of India's leading website called it, "The most ambitious and colourful film".

Flavours is produced by Anupam Mittal, Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK. Directed by Raj and DK, Flavours is a hilarious, witty and refreshingly new look at the lives of the Indian Diaspora in America. Flavours has a variety of characters over multiple storylines that crisscross each other to come together in a unique, entertaining experience never seen before in Indian cinema. The tone is light-hearted, the narrative quirky, the structure innovative.

The movie stars popular Hindi cinema actors Anjan Srivastava and Bharati Achrekar; Hollywood actor Reef Karim; former Miss India-USA Pooja Kumar, who won the Screen Actors Guild Emerging Actor Award for her work in Flavours.

She is also the 'face' of the Broadway musical, Bombay Dreams. The film also has former Miss India-Canada Rishma Malik, who featured in Deepa Mehta's Bollywood/Hollywood.

Earlier, Flavours had the privilege of being selected at over a dozen of the most prestigious film festivals in the world. Some are; The Hamptons, Hawaii, Cairo, Milan, Durban, Bombay, and Bangkok.

For Raj and DK, releasing their feature film in India is a huge occasion. They said, "We are very proud to release our film in India. This is what we have been waiting for."

The director duo has come in for a lot of praise for their work. As The Dallas Morning News said, "The directors show a remarkable amount of maturity in the way they tell various stories."

Indeed, the film won for its directors a Best Emerging Director Award nomination at the Asian American International Film Festival, New York; and the Best Feature Film-World Premiere at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival.

Flavours was also the Opening Night film, San Jose, at the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival.

The film has an excellent soundtrack by Leslie Lewis, well known Indipop artist and one-half of the fusion band Colonial Cousins; and talented composer Mahesh Shankar. The album features artists from around the world, from Amsterdam's Sandhya Sanjana, New York's Omar Alexander to Hyderabad's Dr Shobha Raju; it features lyrics by the film's Executive Producer Sita Menon.

The praises haven't stopped pouring in for Flavours. And that definitely is a sign that people will like this charming comedy in India too.
