UPA is gambling with country's security: Advani Wednesday, October 20 2004 13:56 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
Coming down heavily on the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) Government a day after taking over the mantle of BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) president, L K Advani today (Oct 20, 2004) charged the Congress-led coalition at the Centre with "playing and gambling" with the security of the country and seeking support of Naxalites and ULFA (United Liberation Front of Asom) just to win elections.
The UPA Government has been "playing with and gambling with the security of the country. Just to win elections, they had sought the support of the naxalites (in Andhra Pradesh) and ULFA (in Assam)," Advani said at his first press conference after assuming BJP presidentship from M Venkaiah Naidu.
He alleged that the Congress-led Government had relegated administration to the "back seat" and given "front seat" to attacks against its political opponents.
Describing BJP as the only "national and nationalist" party in the country, Advani said Congress could not be given this definition since its leader Sonia Gandhi was a "videshi (foreigner)" and because of the "crisis" it had created by its policies and approaches towards national security.
The BJP chief said terrorism, which was restricted to the western front, had now spread to the north eastern parts of the country and the Government has allowed lifting of the ban on People's War Group (PWG) in Andhra Pradesh, letting them join hands with the Maoist Communist Centre (MCC).
Observing that the Naxalite problem has become "more serious" owing to the developments in Nepal, he recalled that the BJP-led NDA (National Democratic Alliance) Government had declared that it would talk to any insurgent group only after it gave up arms.
