Saturday, October 23 2004 14:03 Hrs (IST)

Ghaziabad: Thirty-two children have died of a mysterious disease over the last two days while several others have been admitted to various hospitals in parts of Western Uttar Pradesh, official sources said.

As many as 14 children have died in Khekra town in Baghpat district, eight in Muzaffarnagar and 10 in Saharanpur due to a disease which has symptoms similar to that of encephalitis, meningitis and cholera, they said.

Over 100 children with complaints of severe headache, fever and vomiting were brought to health care centres and Government hospitals in Meerut, Baghpat, Muzaffarnagar and Garhmukteshwar districts, the sources said.

Six ailing children were admitted to the Meerut Government Hospital, Baghpat District Magistrate Kamini Ratan said. Three children from Garhmukteshwar have also been admitted in Ghaziabad.

The disease is a result of inflammation of the brain membranes and patients generally vomit blood, S K Arora, Director, health, Meerut division said.

The disease is prevalent among those residing in unhygienic conditions, he said.
