Varun Gandhi pledges 'utmost' loyalty to BJP
Tuesday, October 26 2004 21:38 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Dismissing speculation about the possibility of his joining Congress, Varun Gandhi has said that BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) was the "first, last and only party" he will ever be part of.

Terming as "baseless" reports that he had met Congress president Sonia Gandhi thrice in the recent past, he told RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) mouthpiece 'Panchjanya' in an interview, "I have not met her in the last 3-4 years. Some people were playing politics. They felt that Varun Gandhi would not succeed if such things are spread during the Maharashtra poll campaign."

"I have said this at several places and through different media and I want to tell you that BJP is the first, last and only party that Varun Gandhi will ever be part of," said Gandhi who joined the party along with his mother Maneka ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

Describing BJP as his "natural choice", he said, "I have never been a member of the Congress. I joined BJP when it was in power. Today, the party is in crisis. I cannot leave the party in crisis. My commitment is not to BJP but to Mother India. I want to make this country the most powerful in the world and therefore, BJP is my natural choice."

Late Sanjay Gandhi's son said he chose to join BJP because "by and large, the supporter-activist of BJP is committed to this country".

Accusing the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) Government of pursuing the politics of "vendetta", Gandhi said he found in the RSS the "feeling of sacrifice" which was once the hallmark of the Congress.
