Naidu disturbed by BJP's assertions on Ayodhya Friday, October 29 2004 14:52 Hrs (IST)
Hyderabad:
BJP's (Bharatiya Janata Party) apparent move to revert to hardline Hindutva has pushed its ally, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in a political dilemma with its supremo and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu disapproving of the saffron party's assertions on Ayodhya issue.
Viewing the BJP president L K Advani's invocation of Hindutva plank as a 'disquietening development', the TDP, a key ally of the NDA (National Democratic Alliance), is in the process of assessing the impact of BJP's newfound ideological stridency on the future relations between the two parties.
At a closed-door meeting with a group of party leaders from Telangana region in Hyderabad yesterday (Oct 28, 2004), Naidu was understood to have disapproved of Advani's remark that BJP was committed to construction of Ram temple at Ayodhya.
"We have made our stand clear on Ayodhya issue. It should be resolved through court verdict or consensus among the communities. We will never compromise on secularism," a former TDP Minister quoted Naidu as having said at the meeting.
Though the party leaders called for review of the alliance with BJP in the changed political scenario, Naidu was said to have pointed out that the issue of tie-up could be decided only at the time of elections.
"We were never part of NDA. We had only extended outside support to the Government. We had differed with BJP leadership on several issues including Ayodhya and Gujarat violence. The alliance is only confined to elections," Naidu, whose party had suffered humiliating defeat in the recent elections, said.
