Wife gets 'Talaq' e-mail from husband based in US
Monday, November 1 2004 09:59 Hrs (IST)

Lucknow: Amidst raging controversy over the desirability of 'triple Talaq' without adequate reasons, a man has reportedly used the e-mail to divorce his wife in Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh.

Rahat Iqbal, currently living in the United States, is reported to have recently given triple Talaq to his wife Rubab Anwar through e-mail.

Rubab was married to Rahat Iqbal in 1998, but barely after a month or so her husband left for US promising to send her a visa within 20 days. She received a triple Talaq message from Rahat Iqbal on her e-mail last week.

Though the beleaguered wife immediately challenged it in a court, the mode of Talaq has posed another question before the Muslim scholars whether Talaq through e-mails and SMS was justified in the eyes of Islam.

"Triple Talaq is very much effective in Islam but the authenticity of the communication must be established as any cone can misuse the method," Darul-ul-Ifta Firangi Mahal Secretary and All India Muslim Personal Law Board Member (AIMPLB) Khalid Rashid said.

AIMPLB spokesman Mohammad Hashim Qureshi, however, chose to remain non-committal on the matter saying it was for the 'Muftis' (those who are empowered to issue religious decrees and give opinions on Islamic matters) to decide the matter.

Senior AIMPLB member Maualana Sajjad Nomani alleged as per the information he got, Rahat Iqbal gave her Talaq after Rubab's parents failed to meet his demand for a huge dowry.

If it is true, it is absolutely barbaric, Un-Islamic and inhuman and the husband should be punished."
