Kerry defeats Bush in which election? Guess! Wednesday, November 3 2004 14:00 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
Senator John Kerry may be losing in the US, but he "won" defeating President George W Bush in a mock election among Indians in Delhi.
Live telecast of US poll coverage on big screens, life-size cut-outs of Bush and his challenger Kerry and lively discussions among the people about the results coming in.
This could well have been a scene from the US. But this was the picture at a 'US Presidential Election Watch' in Delhi.
Delhiites, despite the early morning programme for the election watch, arrived at the American Center to participate in the event and 'vote for Kerry'.
Over 300 people voted in a mock presidential poll, open for only Indian participants, with majority of them backing Kerry. While the Democrat won 192 votes, Bush got 109. There were some who voted for the third candidate Ralph Nader, who got 15 votes.
"I voted for Kerry as Bush has acted selfishly in attacking Iraq. I think he has gone to war in Iraq only to gain control over its oil resources," said 14-year-old Priya, one of many schoolchildren who were invited to the election watch, after casting her vote in the mock ballot.
