Kissinger justifies US attack on Afghanistan in 2001 Saturday, November 6 2004 21:21 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
Justifying the US attack on Afghanistan in 2001 as the "only option at that time", former American Secretary of State Henry Kissinger today (Nov 6, 2004), however, disfavoured a similar action by India against Pakistani terrorist camps after strike on Parliament, saying it would have had "huge consequences".
"I believe the US war on Afghanistan was justified as it was the only option at that time," Kissinger, considered close to the Bush Administration, told reporters after addressing the Hindustan Times Leadership Initiative Conference in New Delhi.
Asked if India would have been right in taking similar action in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), the veteran diplomat and Nobel Peace Prize winner, said, "It would have led to huge consequences."
At the same time, he said, he was not in India to lecture how New Delhi should deal with enemies in times of contingencies.
"There was a possibility of a war and hopefully it was avoided. At this juncture, we should not be talking of war when the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is talking to the Pakistani leadership," said Kissinger, who was Secretary of State and National Security Adviser to two US Presidents.
