We are very far from 'democratic Iraq': Major Saturday, November 6 2004 15:58 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
Former British Prime Minister John Major today (Nov 6, 2004) raised doubts over conduct of "legitimate" polls in Iraq in February because of the law and order situation in the country.
He also wondered about the future of the US-led coalition forces in the country after elections.
Election schedule has been announced in Iraq. But there are many questions, particularly whether conditions there will allow free polls, Major said addressing "The Hindustan Times Leadership Initiative Conference" in New Delhi.
He noted that registration of voters had not been conducted in the country neither was there any law and order in the streets.
"In such conditions, is it possible to have free voting? People in some parts may not be able to vote. Will the polling be seen as legitimate if there is no voting in some parts," Major asked.
He said even if elections are conducted successfully on schedule, will the Government be really representative of all sections!
"Democratic Iraq is justifiable but we are very far from there," he said.
Questioning the future of coalition forces, he asked whether there will be chaos if they leave and wondered whether their staying there would "radicalise" the Iraqis.
