Hardline Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani was today (Nov 12, 2004) put under house arrest as he was planning to hold demonstrations against the alleged rape of a mother-daughter duo at Handwara in Jammu and Kashmir, official sources said in Srinagar today.
A police team descended upon Geelani's Haiderpora residence in the wee hours and informed him about the prohibitory orders passed on him.
The sources said Geelani was planning to lead anti-Government protests at a mosque in Srinagar against the incident.
A mother-daughter duo were raped in Handwara town on November 7 allegedly by an Army officer. The accused in the incident Major Rehman Hussain was suspended and placed under "close arrest" yesterday by Army Chief Gen N C Vij.
The blood samples of the accused and the victims were also sent to Central Forensic Laboratory (CFL) at Chandigarh for DNA testing.
