Shankaracharya's bail plea postponed for tomorrow Friday, November 12 2004 17:41 Hrs (IST)
Chennai:
The Madras High Court today (Nov 12, 2004) rejected the plea by counsel for the Kanchi seer Jayendra Saraswathi, to make interim arrangements for his stay outside the jail till the bail application was heard and posted the application for hearing tomorrow.
Presiding over the proceedings, Justice Balasubramaniam directed the public prosecutor, Duraisamy, to file his counter and posted the bail application for hearing at 11 am tomorrow.
Earlier, contending that the bail application did not attach any political motive to the arrest, the public prosecutor alleged that prior to the murder and after it, there were "numerous" phone calls between some of the accused and the Shankaracharya.
Also, a huge amount of money was withdrawn from a private bank, a day after the murder, and a major portion of that money had been recovered from some of the accused, the Public Prosecutor alleged.
A letter written by the victim to the Pontiff before his murder, threatening to "expose" certain happenings at the Mutt was also recovered from an accused, the public prosecutor
alleged.
