Groups clash over Seer's arrest in court premises Saturday, November 13 2004 16:14 Hrs (IST)
Chennai:
Supporters of Kanchi Sankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi today (Nov 13, 2004) clashed with a group said to be members of the Dravida Kazhagam, in the Madras High Court premises immediately after the hearing on an application for bail to the Pontiff was adjourned to November 17.
At least two persons, including an advocate, were roughed up by some persons stated to belong to the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh). Later, they lodged a complaint with the High Court police station.
As soon as Justice R Balasubramanian adjourned the bail application and advocates and others in the court hall came out, a group, in an aggressive manner, started questioning the adjournment and threatened to take action against those supporting the arrest.
The other group started raising slogans against the Sankaracharya leading to a scuffle between the supporters of the Sankaracharya and those not favourably inclined towards him. The police then stepped in and dispersed the groups.
