Kancheepuram: The Shankaracharya of the Kanchi Mutt, Jayendra Saraswathi, appeared before a court in Kancheepuram today (Nov 18, 2004) in connection with the hearing of the prosecution application, seeking police custody.

Earlier, the Shankaracharya was brought in a convoy by police from Vellore prison at 11.15 hrs (IST) to the court of the First Class Judicial magistrate at Kancheepuram.

Meanwhile, a Kancheepuram report said that Jayendra reached the court at around 12.45 hrs (IST) after which the petition on seeking his police custody was taken up.

Three counsels, K S Dinakaran, M Sathyanarayanan and A Arun are representing the defendent in the case.

Meanwhile, one of the accused, Kathiravan, gave a statement under section 164 CRPC before the First Class Judicial Magistrate-II. He was later taken to the sub-jail here.
