US selling Pak anti-tank guns and missiles too! Friday, November 19 2004 09:37 Hrs (IST)
Washington:
The US is selling Pakistan not only eight Orion surveillance aircraft and related equipment worth $970 million but also anti-tank missiles and Pakistan has requested other equipment as well which can have no use against terrorists but only against the Army and Navy of a Governmental enemy, says a media report.
The Pentagon has already notified Congress about the sale of eight P-3C Orion surveillance aircraft, 'The Washington Times' said.
In addition, the Defence Security Cooperation Agency is quoted by paper as saying that it plans to sell Pakistan 2,000 TOW-2A missiles and 14 TOW-2A Fly-to-Buy missiles in a deal valued at 82 million.
Pakistan had also requested the sale of six Phalanx rapid-fire 20-mm guns for surface ships, and the upgrade of six gun systems, a contract worth up to $155 million, the agency said.
The total value of the package could be as high as $1.2 billion.
The notification was however silent on any possible sale of F-16 aircraft, eagerly sought by Pakistan.
Though the notification said, "The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not affect the basic military balance in the region," the paper suggested that many of the equipment sought by Pakistan had no use against al-Qaeda or Taliban but against enemy countries.
