"I would like to know from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa why Diwali day was chosen to arrest the Sankaracharya. Why he could not be put under house arrest in a guest house?" Congress general secretary Digivijay Singh told reporters in New Delhi.

He also said, "Should not his (the Seer's) statement have been taken before his arrest?" Singh said.
