Panaji:
The exposition of the sacred relics of St Francis Xavier, considered one of the most important religious and spiritual events for the Christians, got underway at the Basilica of Bom Jesus in old Goa today (Nov 21, 2004) amidst tight security.
The casket containing the saint's relics was brought out of the Basilica in a procession led by priests of different parishes and taken to the St Paul's Cathedral across the road where it will be kept for the next seven weeks for veneration.
Leading the solemn mass before the procession, Archbishop of Goa and Daman Filipe Neri Ferrao said, "The main purpose of the exposition is to help us deepen and invigorate our faith in Jesus. We must practice the virtues of humble service, a caring attitude and a reconciliatory nature which allows us to give and receive forgiveness."
Goa Governor S C Jamir and Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar were present on the occasion.
On the first day today, an estimated crowd of over 10,000 gathered at the venue to catch a glimpse of the body of St Francis Xavier, considered by many to be the patron saint of Goa.
Church authorities and police are expecting nearly 30 lakh pilgrims over next 40 days for the event, held every 10 years.
Meanwhile, tight security arrangements are in place with 600 para-military forces and six companies of the CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) stationed at the venue in addition to Goa police personnel, official sources said.
