Poor response to SUCI, VHP bandh in West Bengal Monday, November 22 2004 10:33 Hrs (IST)
Kolkata:
Just four days after Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI)-sponsored shutdown, yet another bandh was called for separately by a naxalite outfit and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on two different reasons today (Nov 22, 2004), this evoked a poor response with normal life continuing in the city and other parts in West Bengal remaining unaffected.
While CPM-L (Communist Party if India Marxist-Liberation), has called a 12-hour bandh demanding a rollback of the fuel price hike, the VHP has issued a Bharat bandh call to press for the release of the Shankaracharya.
Vehicular traffic was normal and commercial and Government offices were open in the city where both the organisations have a weak support base.
Shops and bazaars are open while schools remained closed in several places. IG Law and Order Chayan Mukherjee said that there was no untoward incident even as 49 protestors - 32 of CPM-L and 17 from VHP, were arrested for trying to obstruct vehicular traffic.
Railway sources said that train services were normal. Flights were also running on schedule, airport sources said.
Mukherjee said that 6,00 additional police personnel were deployed across the State to maintain law and order. In the city there was mobile patrol to deal with any situation.
