BJP owes explanation on post-Godhra riots: Cong Monday, November 22 2004 21:56 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
Expressing serious concern over "new" evidence surfacing about the alleged involvement of BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) leaders in post-Godhra riots, Congress today (Nov 22, 2004) asked the party leadership as to what action it proposed to take now.
"BJP leadership including Vajpayee and Advani owes an explanation on the issue of accountability as to what action they propose to take now in the light of new evidence surfacing which they had earlier refused to take note of when the incidents (in Gujarat) took place," party spokesman Anand Sharma told reporters.
Referring to reports about the alleged involvement of BJP MLAs and other party activists in the riots, he said the revelations through cellular phone records had made it clear and "conclusively" established their "presence on the spot and participation in the riots" which they had denied earlier.
On the BJP charge that Congress-led UPA (United Progressive Alliance) Government was involved in Kanchi Seer episode, Sharma said ever since the saffron party was ousted from power at the Centre, it had adopted an approach of confrontation and dismissed the charge as a baseless allegation.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has already clarified that centre had no role in the seer's arrest, Sharma said adding the levelling of the charge clearly showed that the BJP did not want to give its "confronationist" mentality.
