Seer case: Mixed response to bandh call in Gujarat Monday, November 22 2004 16:11 Hrs (IST)
Ahmedabad:
Barring few incidents of protestors trying to torch buses in some areas, the one-day nationwide bandh call given by VHP (Vishwa Hindu Parishad) today (Nov 22, 2004) to protest the arrest of Kanchi Seer, Jayendra Saraswati evoked a 'mixed' response in Gujarat with most shops remaining shut.
In Vadodara, the activists tried to torch two buses in separate areas and also drove away the passengers. However, timely intervention by the police prevented the incident from turning violent, police sources told PTI adding, no one was injured in the incident.
A similar incident was reported from the outskirts of Surat city when the protestors stopped a State transport bus and also tried to torch it, police added.
A mob also tried to set afire a local bus in Meghaninagar area of the capital city prompting the municipal corporation to temporarily stall the bus service in the city till situation become normal, municipal corporation officials told
PTI.
Most of the shops in the upmarket CG road, Satellite, Gurukul, as well as Bapunagar and Naroda areas remained close.
In Jamnagar also the bandh received a mixed response with some traders keeping their establishments open while some downed shutters.
