Seer arrest: 'Mutt has not petitioned President, PM' Monday, November 22 2004 09:56 Hrs (IST)
Kancheepuram:
The Kanchi Sankara Mutt on Sunday (Nov 21, 2004) said that they had not petitioned the President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam or the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh about the 'unjust' arrest of the Kanchi Seer Jayendra Saraswathi.
However, many of the devotees had done so, the mutt spokesman R Sankaran, told reporters in Kancheepuram.
Referring to the Acharya being in police custody, Sankaran said the mutt had no idea of the goings on as only the advocate was allowed to meet the Seer for one hour daily.
He also clarified that Raghu, the brother of junior Pontiff Vijendra Saraswathi, was still in the mutt and had not been called by the police for questioning.
Sankaran also said that the Acharya's living quarters in the mutt had not been raided, as rumoured.
Meanwhile, police searched the offices of the Vardarajaperumal temple in Kancheepuram, where the temple official Sankararaman was murdered, and reportedly took away some documents to the police office at the collectorate, where the Acharya is being interrogated.
When contacted, police said that it was 'a routine matter' and that they were just cross checking some facts.
