Chennai:
The VHP's (Vishwa Hindu Parishad) dawn-to-dusk bandh protesting against the arrest of Kanchi Seer Jayendra Saraswathi and demanding his immediate release evoked little impact in Tamil Nadu.
Stray incidents of stone pelting on buses were reported from Kanyakumari. Shops and business centres remained open, while buses, cars, auto rickshaws and two-wheelers were plying as usual amidst intensified police patrolling in the southernmost part of the State, the report said.
Almost all shops and business establishments were functioning while vehicular traffic was as usual in the State capital.
The bandh evoked no response in Madurai district, a report said. Police were stationed at the sensitive points in different parts of the southern districts where the shops and business houses functioned as usual and the buses were seen plying.
Police said no incident was reported so far from any part of the Southern districts so far.
The BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) has planned a dharna in Madurai and other parts of the southern districts, the report said.
VHP sources in Chennai said that they were awaiting reports from various parts of the State.
A Coimbatore report said five organisations, including the BJP had decided to hold a fast between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm.
