De-induction of troops from J&K not cosmetic: Vij Tuesday, November 23 2004 16:45 Hrs (IST)
Hyderabad:
De-induction of troops from Jammu and Kashmir was being done without making compromise on security, Chief of Army, N C Vij said today (Nov 23, 2004).
"It is not cosmetic. We are sincerely trying to de-induct the troops. We are withdrawing part of the troop from the border State as per the Government decision," the Army Chief, who was in Hyderabad to present new colours of Corps to 1 EME, Secunderabad, told reporters in an informal chat.
It was a gesture of friendship to create confidence between two neighbouring countries, he added.
When asked about the number of troops being de-inducted from Jammu and Kashmir, Gen Vij said, "Do not go into numbers which has no value."
Referring to cross-border infiltration, the Army Chief said, "The Indian Army has foiled eight attempts during the last one week in the border State. The efforts of infiltration are not reduced, but our capabilities have gone up."
