Brokering peace: Shaukat Aziz meets Manmohan Singh Wednesday, November 24 2004 13:02 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi today (Nov 24, 2004) to discuss bilateral issues and extend an invitation for the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation) summit in Dhaka next year.
Aziz, who had arrived in New Delhi on a two-day visit along with his wife yesterday, was welcomed by Singh with a phone call, setting in motion a process that can demolish the "Berlin Wall" between the two countries.
Singh had told Aziz, who is on his maiden visit, that the world has lived through times where what was simply unacceptable in international relations have become a norm.
"Who could say some 20 years ago that the Berlin Wall would be a thing of the past," the host Prime Minister had said.
"We can set in motion a similar process in this sub-continent. I earnestly and sincerely will work to that end," he had added.
Singh's remarks had come after a week of strong words from Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf on India's position on Kashmir, accusing New Delhi of not showing flexibility to resolve outstanding issues.
Aziz's visit, essentially to invite Singh for the SAARC Summit, began with a meeting with External Affairs Minister K Natwar Singh yesterday, apparently putting back on track the peace process after hiccups of the recent days.
The two sides agreed at the 45-minute meeting that the composite dialogue should continue to move forward.
