Pak Kashmir Comm says no to Musharraf's proposal Wednesday, November 24 2004 21:45 Hrs (IST)
Islamabad:
Pakistan's Kashmir Committee has said it disagrees with President Pervez Musharraf's formulation to resolve the Kashmir issue, but noted that the debate generated by his proposals would ultimately lead to a solution.
"I do not agree with the proposals of President Musharraf as Islamabad cannot deviate from its stand that Indians, Pakistanis and Kashmiris must sit together to resolve the dispute," Committee Chairman Hamid Naseer Chattha told a group of Indian journalists visiting Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Musharraf had given the formulation to resolve the Kashmir issue at an Iftar party on October 25 in which he suggested identifying seven regions on both sides of LoC, demilitarising them and changing their status.
Asked whether Musharraf had consulted the Committee about his proposals, Chattha, heading the 48-member strong Kashmir Committee, replied in the negative.
"But we believe that Musharraf has mooted this proposal to generate a debate on Kashmir which would ultimately lead to a solution," he said.
To a question about representation of people from Kashmir in talks to resolve the issue, he said this should not be limited to a group or a set of a few individuals but a cross-section of society including all heads of major political parties.
