Twist to Seer case: Cops tortured us, say accused Wednesday, November 24 2004 18:29 Hrs (IST)

Two key accused in the Sankararaman murder case in which Kanchi Seer Jayendra Saraswathi has been arrested, today (Nov 24, 2004) alleged before a court in Kancheepuram that they were tortured by police during their custody.
Kathiravan, who had made an in-camera statement under Sec 164 of CrPc on November 19, told Judicial Magistrate-I G Uthamaraj that he was kept under illegal custody by police from November 3 before he was produced in a court on November 9 for remand.
Another accused Rejini alias Chinna also intervened to say that he was also tortured by the police and he was suffering from some health problems. He said his wife had sent a telegram to the Chief Judicial Magistrate seeking his intervention.
The two made the remarks when they were brought to the court for extension of remand.
Kathiravan during his submission said the police compelled him to endorse whatever they said in the case.
After recording their submissions, the Magistrate extended their remand till December 8.
