US Consulate reopens amidst heavy security Wednesday, November 24 2004 13:18 Hrs (IST)
Mumbai:
The US Consulate and the American Centre in Mumbai, which were closed yesterday (Nov 23, 2004) owing to a threat perception, today (Nov 24, 2004) resumed operations with official business being conducted as per schedule.
"The office was opened today and all business transactions carried out as per the normal schedule," a US Consulate spokesperson said in Mumbai.
Visa seekers, who had to return home yesterday following the sudden closure of the Consulate due to a threat perception, were furnished with all required information and other details relating to the same, the spokesperson said. However, the security outside these establishments continues to be tight, sources added.
Following a warning by FBI intelligence of a likely attack on US establishments in Mumbai and Delhi by an Afghan national, suspected to be hiding in Hyderabad, the US Consulate and American Centre were kept closed as a precautionary measure.
However, "nothing was found" in the input after the Intelligence Bureau and Andhra Pradesh police carried out a probe, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister, R R Patil, who also holds Home portfolio, had said yesterday.
