Security beefed up at US Consulate in Kolkata Wednesday, November 24 2004 16:39 Hrs (IST)
Kolkata:
The West Bengal Government has beefed up security at the US Consulate and American Centre in Kolkata following the security threat that led to the closure of the two facilities in Mumbai yesterday (Nov 23, 2004).
''Security has been strengthened. Extra vigil is being maintained,'' Home Secretary Amit Kiran Deb told newsmen in Kolkata today (Nov 24, 2004) when asked whether the State Government has taken any precaution following the security threat at the US Consulate and American Centre in Mumbai.
In reply to a question, Deb said that the Government had not yet received any security instructions on this from the Union Home Ministry.
Later Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee said that the Consulate and the American Centre already had additional security.
The State Government had decided to strengthen security around the US Consulate and American Centre after a terrorist attack on the American Centre on January 22, 2002.
