Is judiciary to fend for itself: CJI asks Govt Sunday, November 28 2004 10:35 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
Finding topics of law and judiciary missing from the 1000-page official document on 'India Vision 2020' prepared by the Planning Commission, Chief
Justice of India R C Lahoti has asked the Government whether the judiciary has been left to fend for itself.
After perusing an official publication of the Commission running into more than 1000 pages titled 'Committee on India Vision 2020', the CJI felt that every enlightened citizen of India "must have a look into" it.
The report contained research papers on various subjects such as human development, infrastructure, energy and environment, globalisation, governance, transport, telecom, health, population, finance and so on, he told.
"However, I was surprised to note that this document does not contain any paper on law and order, the judiciary or the justice system," he said.
"It gives an impression as if law and judiciary are subjects which have been left to be taken care of themselves for themselves and by themselves," Justice Lahoti said.
The CJI said that everyone harps on the delay in justice delivery but hardly anyone bothers as to how the judges were doing a great job despite their number being abysmally low as compared to other countries.
