CRPF jawan kills seven colleagues; kills himself

Srinagar: A CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) jawan shot dead seven of his colleagues and injured two others before killing himself at a camp in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir in the wee hours of the day (Nov 28, 2004), official sources in Srinagar said.

The sources said, a yet to be identified jawan opened indiscriminate fire on his colleagues at the 152 CRPF Battalion camp in Baramulla town, killing seven of them on the spot. The jawan later killed himself, they said.

The injured are being treated at a Srinagar hospital, the sources said.

The reason behind the jawan's extreme step was yet to be known, they said.

CRPF officials are tight-lipped about the incident and were expected to make a statement later in the day.

Among those killed were a CRPF company commander, a sub inspector and a constable, the sources said.

Inspector General of CRPF R S Sinha has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
