12 students crushed to death by train in Bhopal

Bhopal: At least 12 people were killed today (Nov 28, 2004) when they were run over by a train at Sukhi Sevania Railway Station, around five km from Bhopal, police said.

The victims were crushed by the Chennai-Lucknow Superfast Express while crossing the railway track after alighting from the Bhopal-Bina passenger train, police said.

One person was also injured in the accident, they said.

The victims, mostly college students, were on way to Sanchi to attend a fair, police said adding they picked up a fight before alighting from the train.

The authorities announced an ex-gratia of Rs one lakh to each bereaved family.

Railway Minister Laloo Prasad has expressed his profound grief over the tragedy.

The general manager West Central Railway Jabalpur has reached the accident site, a railway ministry spokesperson said.

Relief medical vans from Bhopal have also reached the site, he said adding there was no damage to railway track and rolling stock.
