Army busts KYKL camp in Manipur, militants escape Monday, November 29 2004 10:34 Hrs (IST)
Imphal:
The Army busted a major camp of the separatist Kanglei Yawol Kann Lup (KYKL) in the interior area of Churachandpur district in Manipur bordering Myanmar and Mizoram.
A Defence release said in Imphal today (Nov 29, 2004) that as a part of the ongoing counter-insurgency operation, Army personnel destroyed a KYKL camp at Behiang near Manipur-Myanmar border yesterday (Nov 28, 2004).
The militants, however, escaped through thick jungles.
The camp comprised of 32 huts, two training grounds, a firing range and a play field. One rifle with magazine and ammunition, 10 grenades, two radio sets and 40 kgs of explosive materials were recovered from the spot, the release said.
The Army had earlier destroyed a major camp of the separatist People's Liberation Army at Theigotang on November 6 and 7 in Churachandpur district.
Most of the camps of the militant outfits at Singhat in the district had been earlier destroyed in the three-month-old counter-insurgency operation, particularly in the three districts of Churachandpur, Chandel and Bishenpur.
Official sources said that the Army had detected at least 120 militant camps in interior parts of the three districts by using Remote Sensing Satellite System. Refusing to disclose the exact locations of these camps in the three districts, they said that operation would be intensified in other districts such as Ukhrul, Senapati and Tamenglong in northern, western and eastern portions of the State by using central Para-military forces.
