AICC task force for a national policy on naxals Monday, November 29 2004 17:25 Hrs (IST)
Hyderabad:
The AICC (All India Congress Committee)-appointed task force on Naxalism, presently engaged in wide-ranging consultations with various extremist-affected States and civil liberties organisations, would recommend an uniform national policy to tackle socio-economic issues that trigger extremist tendencies among people.
"While making a State-wise study of the problem of extremism, we are exploring how we can tackle the issue with a common approach and policy at national level," Convenor of the task force and Congress legislator from the city, M Shashidhar Reddy said in Hyderabad on Monday (Nov 29, 2004).
After visiting some of the Naxalite-affected States, starting with Andhra Pradesh, and holding extensive discussions with various groups, the task force will submit its report to the Congress president Sonia Gandhi within the next three months.
Reddy, who held discussions with Andhra Pradesh Home Minister K Jana Reddy, Naxalite emissaries and mediators in the ongoing peace talks in Hyderabad on Sunday (Nov 28, 2004), said that the task force would make recommendations based on the 'village-level feedback' on the socio-economic factors that breed extremism.
During the three-day tour of Andhra Pradesh, the task force members will visit Medak, Karimnagar, Warangal and Nalgonda districts and meet people's representatives from Naxalite-affected districts.
The task force panel would also visit Bihar and Jharkhand next month.
