Tuesday, November 30 2004 18:14 Hrs (IST)

Hyderabad: Barring isolated incidents of stone throwing at State transport buses and forceful closure of shops, the State-wide BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) bandh to protest "anti-people and anti-farmer policies" of the Congress Government, evoking poor response, passed off peacefully.

Several BJP leaders, including former Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya, party State unit president N Indrasena Reddy, Kishan Reddy MLA and former MLA Baddam Balreddy, staging a sit-in at secretariat in Hyderabad were taken in custody, police said.

Some BJP workers were arrested when they ransacked a e-Seva Center in Chikkadpally area.

There were isolated cases of stone throwing on buses and attempt to close forcefully the business establishments which were foiled by the police.

The bandh was by and large peaceful, police said.

Police lathi charged BJP leaders in Karimnagar and Kurnool to clear the railway tracks when the saffron party leaders tried to stop rail traffic by sitting on the tracks.

In Sangareddy in Medak district, police arrested 250 BJP activists who damaged some RTC buses and also stoned shops.

The bandh evoked partial response in Guntur with shops and business establishments remaining closed.

In Vijaywada city, 37 BJP activists were taken into custody when they launched dharna near the bus depot disrupting normal traffic.
