Army and militants exchange heavy fire in Manipur

Imphal: A heavy exchange of fire has been reported between insurgents and Army personnel from interior Tamenglong district in Manipur, official sources said today (Dec 1, 2004).

The encounter took place between Manipur People's Army (MPA), armed wing of separatist United National Liberation Front (UNLF) and Army personnel of Nine Para regiment at Keiphundai area in Tamenglong district yesterday (Nov 30, 2004), the sources said.

Defence sources said the Army inflicted casualties on insurgents but they could not provide details.

A caller who identified himself as a spokesman of MPA told local media that two Army personnel were killed and four others injured in the encounter.
