BJP to take up Shankaracharya issue in Parliament Wednesday, December 1 2004 12:20 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
In an effort to corner the Government in Parliament, BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) today (Dec 1, 2004) decided to take up issues relating to inflation, Kanchi Shankaracharya's arrest, spat between Union Ministers Laloo Prasad Yadav, Ram Vilas Paswan and "deteriorating" internal security during the Winter Session.
The decision was taken at BJP's Parliamentary Party meeting attended by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and party president L K Advani in New Delhi.
The party will raise issue of Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati's arrest on Friday, BJP Parliamentary Party spokesman V K Malhotra told reporters after the 45-minute meeting, just before top leadership of the party hit the roads in the capital to protest against rising inflation.
Denying that the party was hesitant to raise the matter in view of reservations by some allies and preference was given to inflation issue, he said, "We wanted to raise the issue tomorrow but had to postpone it by a day."
Malhotra said one of the reasons for the postponement was that Vajpayee and Advani have a pre-scheduled programme in Patna tomorrow (Dec 2, 2004).
"It is wrong to say we have given up the issue (of the Seer's arrest). We will raise the issue forcefully in Parliament (during the Winter Session which commenced today)," he said.
