'Kanchi Seer gives consent to move for bail in SC' Wednesday, December 1 2004 22:36 Hrs (IST)
Vellore:
In a change of his stand, the Shankaracharya of Kancheepuram, Jayendra Saraswathi, has given his consent to move for bail in the Supreme Court 'if necessary'.
Krishnamani, Jayendra's counsel, disclosing this to reporters after calling on the Seer at the central prison in Vellore, said "we will move the Apex Court if necessary, Shankaracharya has given his consent on the matter."
The Shankaracharya had earlier reported to have told his lawyers not to move to the Supreme Court. Jayendra Saraswathi had filed a bail application in the Madras High court seeking bail in the Sankararaman murder case and another bail application in the sessions court at Chennai in connection with the Radhakrishnan assault case.
While the Madras High Court had reserved its order in the bail application on Sankararaman murder case, the sessions court is likely to take up the bail plea of the Acharya on December 3.
Krishnamani said Jayendra had denied to him that he (the Seer) had made any confessional statement during his interrogation at the police custody.
The prosecution opposing the bail plea of the Shankaracharya had told a Madras High Court that the Acharya had made a confessional statement about his role in the Sankararaman murder case.
