Police probing death in Kanchi Mutt 19 yrs ago Thursday, December 2 2004 19:08 Hrs (IST) - World Time
Nileshwaram (Kerala):
A team of Tamil Nadu police has visited the residence of a Sanskrit student of Kancheepuram Chandrasekhara College, who allegedly died due to electrocution in the Kanchi Mutt 19 years ago, at nearby Bangalam and questioned the family members about the death.
The team reached the victim's residence last evening (Dec 1, 2004) acting on a fax message recently sent by the family to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister seeking a thorough probe into the death of the 21-year old Keshavan Namboodiri in the Mutt on October 1, 1985.
The family had sent the fax in the wake of the arrest of the Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi in a murder case on November 11.
"The police team with a copy of the fax message reached our house late last evening and recorded our version in detail," Ishwaran Namboodiri, elder brother of Keshavan Namboodiri, said.
"We are not after compensation but only wanted to unravel the mystery behind the death of Keshavan as we are sure that his death could not be due to electrocution as alleged by the Mutt authorities," Narayanan Namboodiri, another brother of Keshavan and priest of the Arakath Devi Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, told over phone.
Ishwaran Namboodiri said his family came to know about the tragedy on October 2, 1985 through a telegram sent by the Mutt authorities, saying that he had died in an accident.
In another message, the Mutt officials informed that they were arranging to send the body to Keshavan's native place in Kasaragod District.
