Uproar in RS over Kanchi Shankaracharya's arrest Thursday, December 2 2004 15:35 Hrs (IST) - World Time
New Delhi:
The issue of the arrest of Kanchi Shankaracharya surfaced in the Rajya Sabha with the Centre appealing to parties not to politicise the issue and allow the law to take its own course even as BJP vociferously charged the Tamil Nadu Government for its shabby treatment of Seer who was arrested in connection with a murder case.
"I appeal to political parties not to give political colour to the case and allow the judicial process to take its course," Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Suresh Pachouri said asserting that the Central Government was not involved in it "directly or indirectly".
Responding to an hour-long heated discussion during Zero Hour, Pachouri said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in his letter to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has emphasised that law must be allowed to take its course and ensure the well being of the Seer in view of his status, advanced age and indifferent health while in custody.
Pachouri denied that Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy had consulted the Centre before the arrest of the Seer in Mehboobnagar in the State by Tamil Nadu Police on November 11.
"Neither the Prime Minister nor Home Minister Shivraj was consulted by the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister," he said adding that BJP's charge in this regard was "baseless".
