I have high regard for Jayalalithaa: Seer's counsel Thursday, December 2 2004 16:32 Hrs (IST) - World Time
Chennai:
I Subramanian, senior advocate and counsel for Kanchi Seer Jayendra Saraswathi, today (Dec 2, 2004) said he had the highest regards for Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.
Making a submission in the Madras High Court after public prosecutor K Duraisamy sought adjournment of the bail plea filed by the Seer till Monday (Dec 6, 2004), Subramanian described Jayalalithaa as a person of 'great compassion'.
Pointing out that he had served under Jayalalithaa for over eight years (holding various positions including that of public prosecutor), he said she had told the press in Delhi that the decision to arrest the Seer was the most painful one.
Jayalalithaa also took particular interest in gender offence cases, he pointed out.
Duraisamy had sought the adjournment to enable Supreme Court lawyer, K T S Tulsi, who is representing the prosecution in the bail application, to argue on the additional citations put forward by Subramanian in relation to Sec 439 CrPC and 437 CrPC to say that the judge had the power to grant bail independent of Sec 437.
