Chennai:
VHP (Vishwa Hindu Parishad) president Ashok Singhal last night (Dec 1, 2004) appealed to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to release Kanchi Seer Jayendra Saraswathi, who was arrested in connection with the temple official Sankararaman murder case.
Addressing a public meeting in Chennai, he alleged that there was a big "conspiracy behind the Seer's arrest". Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who wanted to "unseat all the Seers of Hindu Mutts" had hatched the conspiracy, he said.
Jayalalithaa had only succumbed to the pressure from the Centre and arrested the Seer. She should order the Seer's release, respecting the Hindu sentiments. "I do not blame her. She had succumbed to pressure from the Centre," Singhal said.
He said that the arrest of the Seer had 'orphaned' lakhs of Hindus in the country. After the Seer's arrest, the police was conducting investigations on the lines dictated by the Central investigating agencies, he alleged.
The VHP would organise 'satyagraha' all over the country on December 5, 2004 demanding the immediate release of the Seer, he said adding that he himself would lead the protest at Jaipur.
He said that the case against the Seer would not stand in a court as one of the allegations against the Seer was that large sum of money had been withdrawn from ICICI bank account of the Mutt to be given to the culprits responsible for murder. "The Mutt did not have any account with that bank," he said.
He said that Jayalalithaa and the Kanchi Seer might have difference of opinion on small matters but were not 'inimical'. Sankara Mutt officials had confirmed this to him, he said that while justifying his allegation that there was a conspiracy behind the arrest and the involvement of Sonia Gandhi in it.
