35 mentally challenged children hurt in bus mishap

Thiruvananthapuram: Thirty-five children and two staff members of a school for mentally challenged were injured when the school bus turned upside down at Peroorkada in the city this morning (Dec 3, 2004).

The accident occurred when the children were being taken to attend a function organised in connection with the World Disabled Day, police said. The injured have been taken to the Medical College Hospital and SAT hospital.

The children belonged to the PRS Pillai Memorial School, police said.

Most of the children received minor injuries only. Two children were admitted to the hospital ward and others were under observation, hospital sources said.

According to police, the bus skidded and turned upside down.

Thirty of the victims were inmates of the school and the others day scholars.
