Four CRPF jawans killed as militants storm camp Friday, December 3 2004 22:55 Hrs (IST) - World Time

At least four CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) jawans were killed and several others injured as two heavily-armed militants stormed a camp in Sopore area of Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir early today.
"Four jawans have been killed so far and the exchange of fire between the ultras holed up in the camp and the security forces is continuing," a CRPF spokesman said in Srinagar.
The ultras forced their way into the camp, which is jointly occupied by CRPF and local police, at around 5.00 hrs (IST) by hurling grenades and opening indiscriminate fire at the drop gate near the Degree College Sopore, he said adding two CRPF jawans were killed on the spot.
Two more CRPF personnel were killed in the subsequent exchange of fire, he said.
Some other security personnel were also injured but the exact number was not known yet as the encounter was continuing, the spokesman said.
Senior police, paramilitary and intelligence officials have rushed to the spot to assist the operation to flush out the militants.
Al Mansoorian militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack. A caller identifying himself as the spokesman of the outfit told a local news agency that a squad of Al Mansoorian had stormed the camp in the wee hours today and inflicted "heavy losses" on the security forces.
