Kancheepuram:
A court in Kancheepuram today (Dec 3, 2004) extended the judicial custody of two accused in the Sankararaman murder case, till Dec 17, 2004.
The first class judicial magistrate, G Uthamaraj, before whom "Maattu" Bhasker and Sylvester Stalin, were produced at the end of their judicial remand period today, extended the remand by 14 days.
He also extended the remand of six accused in the 'proxy surrender' case by 14 days.
Police arrested A Sekar, K S Kumar, Ananthakumar, Meenskshisundram, Kuruvai Ravi and R D Palani on November 5.
Earlier, they surrendered before a magistrate at Chennai, claiming that they were responsible for the murder of Sankararaman.
However, during interrogation, they told the police that they had surrendered as they were promised money.
When counsel for Bhasker and Stalin, Vijayakumar alleged in the court that his clients were tortured, the magistrate said under the Prisons Act, the complaint had to be given in writing by the undertrial to the prison authorities.
Vijayakumar later told reporters that his clients had complained of torture in prison and were not provided paper to write their complaints. They could not even air their grievances to anyone, he said.
The magistrate chided media personnel for crowding in the court premises and preventing police from doing their duty and giving trouble to the accused by surrounding the vehicle in which they were brought.
