BJP leaders 'express reservation' on Uma's return
Friday, December 3 2004 15:46 Hrs (IST) - World Time

New Delhi: Amid speculation that BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) may revoke the suspension of its firebrand leader Uma Bharti from the party, senior leaders today (Dec 3, 2004) reportedly conveyed to party president L K Advani their reservations over withdrawing the disciplinary action.

Several second-rung party leaders, who were attacked in a controversial letter purportedly written by Bharti, reportedly met or spoke over phone and conveyed to him their displeasure over the content of the letter, excerpts of which appeared in a Hindi magazine yesterday (Dec 2, 2004).

Party sources said the decks were almost cleared for revocation of the disciplinary action against her after she expressed regret for her conduct and hurting Advani at a key party meeting here on Nov 10, which led to her removal as party general secretary and suspension from the primary membership of the party.

A senior leader on condition of anonymity said, "This is an act of severe indiscipline. How can we work with such a person in our team who has targeted almost the entire second line of leadership."

The controversial letter had accused Mahajan of grooming such people in all State-units of the party, who were working with the objective of getting into power and making money.

The anonymous letter also attacked Jaitley, Mahajan, Sushma Swaraj of "tarnishing her reputation through their off the record media briefings".

The letter also attacked almost the entire second-line of leadership including Venkaiah Naidu, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Shivraj Singh Chauhan and Kalyan Singh.

Bharti, however claimed yesterday that she had not written any such letter and the one which appeared in the magazine was fake. She also said she would be consulting her lawyers on taking legal action against those who circulated the letter.
