Pappu Yadav on fast-unto-death inside Beur jail Saturday, December 4 2004 17:37 Hrs (IST) - World Time
Patna:
Charging the authorities with hatching a conspiracy to get him eliminated, incarcerated RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal) Lok Sabha member from Madhepura Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav today (Dec 4, 2004) sat on an indefinite fast inside the high-security Beur jail in Patna.
The MP's State representative Surendra Singh Yadav said in a press release that Ranjan, lodged in the jail in connection with the murder of CPM (Communist Party of India-Marxist) MLA Ajit Sarkar, accused the jail superintendent Dilip Kumar Singh of ''plotting to get him (Pappu) finished'' by allowing visitors to have an audience from ''an unsafe window''.
He also alleged that the jail authorities were not shifting him to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi despite the recommendations of the medical board that had examined the ailing RJD MP.
When contacted, the jail superintendent Dilip Singh confirmed that the undertrial (Pappu Yadav) was on a hunger strike seeking special arrangements for facilitating his meeting with the visitors.
The Supreme Court had on Thursday (Dec 2, 2004) ordered a CBI probe into the scuffle between the Beur jail staff and supporters of RJD MP Pappu Yadav during a visit by IG (Prisons) last Wednesday when the officer objected to the presence of a large number of unauthorised visitors meeting the jailed Lok Sabha member.
The SC had asked the IG (Prisons) to submit a detailed report on the incident on or before December 13.
