Chaos in LS over Ayodhya as SP-BJP members clash Monday, December 6 2004 14:39 Hrs (IST) - World Time
New Delhi:
Samajwadi Party (SP) and the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party)-Shiv
Sena today (Dec 6, 2004) clashed in the Lok Sabha over the Ayodhya issue with the former accusing top BJP leaders of their involvement in the conspiracy to demolish the disputed structure on December 6, 1992.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour, SP member Ramji Lal Suman demanded that those who had demolished the mosque should be condemned in very strong terms, triggering vociferous protests from BJP and Shiv Sena members.
Speaker Somnath Chatterjee expunged certain remarks made by Suman from the records after BJP deputy leader V K Malhotra vehemently objected to them amid loud shouts of 'Jai Sri Ram' by party members.
Basudeb Acharya, CPM (Communist Party of India-Marxist), contended that former UP Chief Minister Kalyan Singh had deposed that the conspiracy to demolish the mosque in Ayodhya was hatched at the residence of L K Advani.
The CPM member said that Singh had changed his statement after rejoining the party and this should be clarified in the House.
Mohan Singh, SP, said that December 6, 1992 was a "black day" in the country's history (the day the mosque was demolished). Samajwadi Party members staged a walkout.
Some BJP members trooped into the well as Samajwadi Party members raised the issue of demolition of the Babri Masjid. Senior members, however, persuaded them to go back to their seats.
The Speaker repeatedly warned the agitated members that he would take action against them if they did not behave in the House.
Malhotra contended that Supreme Court directions were being followed and under no circumstances could the idols be removed from the site.
Chandrakant Khaire (Shiv Sena) said that Ayodhya is the land of Lord Ram and the Ram temple should be built at Ramjanmabhoomi.
Efforts by the Speaker to restrain the members proved futile on several occasions as the heated exchanges continued.
Samajwadi Party members tried to raise the issue immediately after the House had assembled for the day but the Speaker told them that they could do it during Zero Hour.
