UP Govt for fresh notification in Babri demolition Monday, December 6 2004 22:51 Hrs (IST) - World Time
Lucknow:
Uttar Pradesh Government today (Dec 6, 2004) said it was "seriously considering" the issuance of a fresh notification in a case relating to Babri Masjid demolition and a decision on this would be taken at an "appropriate time".
"The Government is not avoiding the matter," Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mohd Azam Khan told newsmen in Lucknow adding, "It is under serious consideration and a decision in this regard will be taken at an appropriate time."
He said the State Government was committed to abiding by the court order in this regard.
Khan said different Muslim organisations have also been demanding issuance of a fresh notification relating to a particular case.
"Issuing a fresh notification and transferring the trial from the Rae Bareli to a special CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) court in Lucknow are also under consideration," he said.
The Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court had in 2001 quashed the State Government's notification constituting a special court to try the case against BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) president L K Advani, former Union Ministers Uma Bharti and M M Joshi, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh, BJP leader Vinay Katiyar and five others.
The court had, in its judgement, said there was a legal "defect" in the notification and the State Government could, if it so desires, issue a fresh notification.
